Pitons and hammers in mountaineering

Pitons are still essential where quick protection won't fit: knifeblades for thin cracks, universal pitons for the rest. The hammer is used to place them and to test fixed pitons before trusting them. To equip permanent anchors you need certified bolts and hangers.
