The Salewa Ortles HMS M is a pear-shaped carabiner with a screwgate, specifically designed for use with the Munter hitch (HMS) and for belaying maneuvers in crags and mountains. Its wide pear shape provides ample space for the rope to move, allowing it to accommodate multiple knots simultaneously or for the Munter hitch to slide smoothly and controllably even under load.
Construction and Geometry
The body is made of high-strength aluminum, balancing lightness and robustness for intensive use. The rope contact surface is deliberately wider than a standard carabiner: this construction choice reduces localized metal wear, increases long-term durability, and improves rope glide during rappelling or belaying maneuvers.
