The Petzl Spatha is a fixed-blade cutting knife designed specifically for use on rock faces and in rope rescue situations. Its primary function is to quickly cut ropes, cords, and webbing in situations requiring immediate action, even under stress or with gloved hands.
Blade and Opening
The blade profile is optimized for cutting synthetic fibers: its curved geometry allows it to effectively slice through both dynamic ropes and thin cords, reducing the force needed for the cutting action. It opens via a serrated side wheel, which can be operated with one hand even while wearing climbing or via ferrata gloves — a technical detail that is far from secondary in an emergency.
Carrying and Integration into Equipment
The Spatha features a pass-through hole compatible with a carabiner, allowing it to be clipped directly to a harness gear loop, keeping it always accessible. This system avoids the need for separate sheaths and reduces the risk of forgetting the knife on the ground before starting the climb. Its compact structure makes it suitable for both sport climbing and alpine excursions, without adding significant weight to the gear.
