DESCRIPTION
The Edelrid OHM is an assisted braking device to be installed on the first quickdraw of a route, specifically designed for climbing pairs where there is a significant weight difference between the lead climber and the belayer. In its second generation, it introduces substantial updates that improve usability compared to the previous model.
How it works and when to use it
Mounted directly on the first anchor of the route, the OHM increases rope resistance during a fall, reducing the impact force on the belayer and preventing them from being violently lifted off the ground. It is the most effective technical solution when the weight difference exceeds 10 kg, a common but often underestimated condition during crag climbing sessions.
Technical specifications
- Integrated swivel joint reduces rope twisting and simplifies device retrieval by the belayer
- Compatible with ropes from 8.9 mm to 11 mm in diameter
- Constructed from stainless steel and aluminum for durability and low weight
- CE / UIAA certified as a climbing safety device
- Weight: ~220 g
- Easier rope insertion and removal compared to the first generation
The OHM does not alter the lead climber's climbing dynamics, but it concretely protects the belayer in situations of weight imbalance, making the climbing pair safer without compromising the fluidity of progression.
