DESCRIPTION
The ATC-Alpine Guide from Black Diamond is a tubular belay device specifically designed for mountaineering on mixed terrain and ice, where every gram counts and maneuverability is limited. Compared to the classic ATC Guide, this Alpine version is lighter and more compact, a difference that is concretely felt when handling gear with gloves or at exposed belay stations.
Compatibility and technical performance
The device accepts ropes from 6.9 mm up to 9 mm in diameter, with an optimal range stated between 8.1 and 8.5 mm: the ideal balance point between controlled glide and effective braking, suitable for the twin and half ropes typical of alpine ascents. The geometry of the channels ensures calibrated friction even with thin and potentially icy ropes.
Functionality at belay and during descents
Thanks to the guide mode, the ATC-Alpine Guide allows you to belay one or two second climbers directly from the belay station in auto-blocking mode, freeing up your hands during maneuvers.
