DESCRIPTION
The Black Diamond ATC-Pilot is an assisted belay device specifically designed for single rope management at the belay station, on multi-pitch routes, or in the gym. The mechanism is based on an asymmetric channel geometry that automatically enters braking mode when the rope is loaded by a fall, reducing the effort required by the belayer to hold their partner.
Technical Features
The ATC-Pilot is compatible with ropes from 8.7 mm to 10.5 mm in diameter, covering most sport climbing and alpine climbing ropes on the market. The body is made of milled aluminum, which keeps the overall weight of the device down while maintaining good wear resistance at the rope contact points. The design includes a dedicated attachment hole for the belay carabiner, allowing the device to be secured to the anchor point during belaying at the station without the need for additional accessories.
In Use
Compared to a classic tube, the ATC-Pilot offers more precise control when taking in rope thanks to assisted feeding, without sacrificing the fluidity needed to lower your partner gradually and controllably. It is a suitable solution for those who practice multi-pitch climbing and want an additional margin of safety at the belay station, without switching to a complex mechanical device like a Grigri. Its low weight also makes it suitable for use in lightweight alpinism.
