DESCRIPTION
The Petzl STRING M is a rubber protector designed to complete and preserve sport climbing quickdraws. In practice on a crag, carabiners tend to rotate along the sling, positioning the gate towards the rock or inwards: a condition that reduces the system's resistance and increases the risk of accidental opening. The STRING solves this problem by keeping the carabiner locked in the correct position on the rope end, the part in direct contact with the bolt or hanger on the wall.
Function and construction
The protector serves a dual function: it fixes the carabiner in the optimal position and, at the same time, protects the sling from localized abrasion at the point of contact with the carabiner's eye. Wear at that point is one of the main causes of premature deterioration of quickdraw slings, and the STRING acts as a sacrificial barrier between the two components. Its geometry includes an opening window that allows for correct and safe installation of the carabiner without forcing the fabric.
