DESCRIPTION
Petzl balancing weights are technical accessories designed to optimize the performance of ice axes for technical mountaineering, ice climbing, and dry tooling. They are mounted symmetrically on both sides of the blade and act on the weight distribution of the tool, significantly altering its dynamic behavior during striking.
How they work and why they make a difference
In hard ice climbing, any imprecision in the strike results in bounces, deviations, or unstable anchors. By adding controlled mass to the blade, the ice axe's center of gravity shifts towards the tip, increasing impact force and reducing lateral dispersion upon contact with the ice. The result is a deeper and more precise anchor on the first strike, with less wasted energy during technical sections.
