DESCRIPTION
The Black Diamond Stopper #9 is a high-strength aluminum alloy passive protection nut, part of one of the most reliable and long-lasting nut lines in the trad climbing industry. Its dual-tapered geometry is not accidental: it allows the nut to be used in two distinct orientations, adapting to both regular cracks and flared or shallow cracks where a traditional profile would not offer sufficient contact with the rock.
Construction and Technical Data
The nut's body is made from anodized aluminum, which ensures a surface resistant to oxidation and wear even after years of outdoor use. The #9 falls into the mid-to-high range of the series, covering correspondingly sized cracks with a solid profile and a steel cable that ensures robustness for removal and resistance to fall shocks. The color coding allows for quick identification on the rack during ascent.
Use in Trad Climbing
This stopper is one of the fundamental elements in any complete trad rack. It is used by placing it in natural constrictions in the rock, where the wedge shape generates friction and mechanical blockage under load. The dual lateral profile makes it particularly versatile in situations where the crack is not uniform or perfectly parallel. Compared to camming devices, it offers the advantage of low weight and quiet, immediate handling, without moving parts subject to wear.
