DESCRIPTION
The Wild Country Friend 1.0 is a four-lobe mechanical cam designed for active protection in medium-sized cracks. Invented by Ray Jardine in the late 1970s, the Friend literally redefined mountaineering and rock climbing: where a parallel crack was once a problem, with a Friend it becomes an opportunity for solid and reliable protection.
Mechanics and Materials
Its operating principle is based on four lobes with logarithmic geometry which, under load, increase pressure against the crack walls rather than slipping. The stem is made of high-strength aerospace aluminum, while the lobes are precision-milled aluminum alloy to ensure homogeneous contact with the rock. The stainless steel trigger ensures consistent mechanism smoothness even after years of intense use. The rigid head of the Friend 1.0 makes it particularly suitable for parallel or slightly flared cracks, where flexible stem models may be less stable.
